What is a forward-deployed engineer?
A forward-deployed engineer (FDE) is a senior engineer who joins a client's team and owns outcomes: they work in the client's standups, repository and tools, and the client keeps direction of the work. Unlike outsourcing, nothing is handed off to a vendor team; unlike a freelancer on a task, the engineer is part of the team for months. DevStaff places forward-deployed engineers from Eastern Europe on time and materials.
| Model | Who directs the work | Where the engineer works | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forward-deployed engineer | You | Inside your team, your process and tools | Senior capacity that owns a part of your product for months |
| Staff augmentation | You | Inside your team | Filling seats; seniority and ownership vary by vendor |
| Outsourcing | The vendor | In the vendor's team, delivering to a scope | A defined project you do not want to manage |
| Freelancer | You, per task | Alongside your team, often part-time | Short, well-defined tasks |
When an FDE fits
- Your roadmap is bigger than your team, and you want senior people who need little management.
- You want to keep direction of the work and the knowledge inside your team.
- You need someone embedded within two weeks, not after a three-month hiring cycle.
When it does not
If you want a fixed-price project delivered against a scope with no involvement from your side, outsourcing is the better model. If the work is a one-week task, a freelancer is cheaper.
How DevStaff works
DevStaff places forward-deployed engineers: senior engineers from Eastern Europe, headquartered in Romania, who join your team and own outcomes. You approve each profile; most engineers start 24 to 72 hours after approval and under 14 days from the brief. Billing is hourly time and materials with one monthly invoice and a 15-day risk-free period. DevStaff can also consolidate contractors from several providers under one contract and one invoice.
