When you need a developer, you usually don't want your supplier to start searching from scratch.

At DevStaff.ai, we use an external bench: a network of independent developers and small teams we already have relationships and commercial agreements with.

When you send us a requirement, we check that network first.

What is an external bench?

An external bench is a network of developers who are not employed and sitting between projects. They work independently or with other companies and become available at different times.

We stay connected with them so that when a suitable project comes up, we already have a relationship in place.

The result is simple: we can look for the right person within an existing network instead of starting a new search from zero.

How does the DevStaff.ai external bench work?

The process is straightforward.

You tell us what you need: the role, technical requirements, expected start date and project details.

We check our network for people who match the requirement and are available.

If we find a good fit, we introduce them to you.

If we don't have someone suitable, we'll tell you. We don't want to force a match simply because someone happens to be available.

What's the difference between an internal and external bench?

An internal bench usually consists of employees who are between projects and remain on the company's payroll while waiting for their next assignment.

An external bench works differently.

The developers aren't sitting on our payroll waiting for work. They're part of our wider network, and we engage with them when the right project and timing come together.

This allows us to maintain access to a broader network without maintaining a large internal bench.

Why use an external bench?

The main advantage is access.

Building a new relationship with a developer takes time. Discussing commercial terms, availability and the basics of working together also takes time.

With an external bench, much of that groundwork has already happened.

So when you need someone, we can start with people we already know.

It's particularly useful when you need a specific profile or when timing matters.
